Granny's Merry Christmas

Kishorekumar 62
"Granny?  I just called to wish you happy holidays and a joyous season of the year.  I'm  home from college and saw your lights in the window and that big sign that says 'Merry Christmas.'  You gotta get with the program, you know, it's not politically correct to have that sign up like that.  You need to catch up with the modern world."

"And besides nobody knows for sure when Jesus was born anyway, and there are people who don't believe in Christmas, so we have to respect everyone."

Now I's thinkin.'  What does Merry Christmas have to do with politics anyway.  And why does saying Merry Christmas disrespect anyone either?  Here in Cloutierville where folks have respect for their Granny nobody cares if you say Merry Christmas or Happy Holidays as long as you wave at your neighbors and take cookies or cupcakes or jars of homemade jam and visit the shut-ins on Christmas.  It's what you do not what you say that counts.

But Lionel, he always comes home from that school up north with his fancy ways and thinks he's gonna tell Granny how things oughta be done, as if pecan pickin' didn't teach me somethin and raising kids and readin' the Good Book didn't give this old heart the lessons everyone needs in life.

So Merry Christmas everyone.  I'll keep the lights on for you.
